AERODYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF AN AIRFOIL SHAPED FUSELAGE
ABSTRACT
The aim of this project is to design and construct an airfoil shape fuselage and compare it with the conventional cylindrical shape fuselage. The fuselage, or body of the airplane, is a long hollow tube which holds all the pieces of an airplane together. In this experiment we have used airfoil shaped fuselage instead of conventional cylindrical shape fuselage. The airfoil shape of the body means that it also contributes to the aircraft's lift. The airfoil shaped fuselage produces lift along with wing. So fuel economy can be improved due to the increase of lift. In this project we have selected profile NACA 4225 for the airfoil shaped fuselage. The aerodynamics characteristic of this model was experimented in wind tunnel.
From the experiment it was observed that airfoil shaped fuselage can produce more lift than the conventional cylindrical shape fuselage. So airfoil shaped fuselage is more economic than the conventional cylindrical shape fuselage.
