REPAIRING AND MODIFICATION OF A DOWNDRAFT GASIFIER
ABSTRACT
The use of renewable energy has been enhanced recently because of its easy availability and consciousness of the issues about global energy demand. The renewable fuel, biomass can be used as the primary energy source for fuel cell, micro turbine and reciprocating engine applications. Rice husk has been used as biomass to produce producer gas in the downdraft gasifier in this project work. The grate system of the existing downdraft gasifier has been modified to use rice husk instead of wood. Effective fuel such as CO and H2 can be obtained by incomplete combustion of biomass fuel. For a constant air flow rate 1.37m3/min at 635°C combustion zone temperature 5% CO has been obtained in producer gas. A cooling unit and a gas filter have been constructed to cool and purify the producer gas. The producer gases can be used to run rice mills, produce electricity and to meet other rural needs.
